SEEMA Day

When will SEEMA Day be celebrated? November 1st of each calendar year.

What is SEEMA Day? SEEMA Day stands for “See.My.Abuse” and aims to raise awareness about the hidden realities of domestic violence. This day, when observed, would help highlight that some individuals experiencing abuse may not show visible signs, and their circumstances may not be readily apparent.

SEEMA Day is dedicated to honoring the hidden survivors who are trapped in domestic violence relationships and unable to leave. By bringing attention to this issue, we hope to encourage support and understanding for those who need it most.

While the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is a crucial initiative, SEEMA Day offers a distinct focus on the often-invisible aspects of domestic violence. It aims to:

  • Recognize the silent suffering of survivors who may not display outward signs of abuse.
  • Promote awareness of the complexities of domestic violence and the challenges faced by those who cannot leave.
  • Encourage workplaces to create a culture of support and understanding for those experiencing hidden forms of abuse.

How should SEEMA Day be celebrated or observed? By wearing black.

Why was SEEMA Day created? SEEMA Day, standing for “See.My.Abuse,” is being created to shed light on the hidden realities of domestic violence. Many survivors experience abuse in ways that aren’t outwardly visible, making their struggles difficult to recognize and address. This day aims to honor those hidden survivors, encouraging workplaces and communities to create a culture of support and understanding for those experiencing abuse, regardless of whether it’s readily apparent. SEEMA Day seeks to break the silence surrounding hidden forms of domestic violence and empower those affected to seek help and find solace.

This day follows the release of “SEEMA:The Film,” a powerful story exploring the devastating consequences of domestic abuse. The film depicts a woman’s arduous journey through a cycle of violence, showcasing the hidden struggles of those trapped in such situations.
