When is this day? October 24

What is this day? The elderly are particularly susceptible to urinary tract infections. Older individuals are more vulnerable for many reasons, including their overall susceptibility to infections due to a weakened immune system.  National Senior UTI Awareness Day exists to inform people of the risks associated with Senior UTIs.

Common UTI Symptoms:

  • Urine that appears cloudy or dark
  • Bloody urine
  • Strong or foul-smelling urine
  • Frequent or urgent need to urinate
  • Pain or burning during urination
  • Feelings of pressure in the lower pelvis
  • Low-grade fever
  • Night sweats, shaking or chills

UTI Symptoms in Seniors:

  • Confusion or delirium
  • Agitation
  • Hallucinations
  • Other unusual behavioral changes
  • Poor motor skills or loss of coordination
  • Dizziness
  • Falling

Who created this day? Daisy Jackson started this journey 3 yrs ago with a UTI (urinary track infection) that went sepsis and landed her in ICU. Prior to that she was a vibrant, jazzy o’lady, living her independent life. For 3 years she was riddled with this reoccurring infection. They often go undetected and can be deadly to the elderly. They become confused, agitated, incontinent, off balance and it can be mistaken for early signs of dementia. It’s not! It attacks organs if left untreated. A simple urinalysis can prevent it! Daisy Jackson lost this battle last Thursday 10.24.19. I am angry and heart broken. I want to make it a day to bring awareness and hope it can help save a life.

How should this day be observed? Educate yourself on the warning signs of UTIs in the elderly, and advocate for those in your life who may be at risk.
