What is National Food Faces Day? Holland America Line Master Chef Rudi Sodamin is the culinary pop artist behind Food Faces, edible creations that display a cast of unforgettable characters expressing a whimsical spectrum of human emotion. Sodamin began to design and photograph his stylized Food Faces several years ago as a labor of creative love. Since he created his first Food Face, he has captured hundreds of distinctive characters through his lens. His artistic inspiration comes from culinary ingredients and human expression, and he created each plate personality from food items including vegetables, fruit, meats, fish, grains and sweets.
Sodamin still creates Food Faces to this day, sometimes just because he is inspired, and other times to celebrate a special holiday or moment in time. They are shared on his personal social media pages and on Holland America Line’s social channels.
Why is this day being celebrated or observed? Holland America Line is a well-known cruise line that will celebrate 150 years in 2022. Sodamin has been in the industry for more than 35 years. Not only is he an artist with his Food Faces, he’s also an artist in the kitchen, guiding the menus in Holland America Line’s main dining room and specialty restaurants. He is an industry icon, and his Food Faces bring joy to all. This day would be a celebration of Sodamin’s wonderful creations that put a smile on the face of everyone who sees them! April 6 is his birthday. Fun fact: he is an identical triplet from Austria! So while this day is not celebrating his birthday, it’s a wonderful tribute to his Food Faces.
