When is the day celebrated? September 8th of every calendar year.

What is National Double Merle Awareness Day?

Animal lover, foster, pet and family expert, and special needs advocate, founded National Double Merle Awareness Day in the United States in 2022. September 8 is the date chosen since that is their date of birth. The sisters were rescued from being euthanized from their breeder. Kami signed up to foster Hope, her and her husband quickly feel in love and foster failed her shortly after. A few months later Lucy Lou came into her possession never leaving her sister again. Since getting both sisters in 2019 Kami and her husband have dedicated their lives to helping and rescuing these beautiful souls, using their business as a support system.

How do you celebrate?

Ways to celebrate Double Merle Awareness Day: Adopt a double merle from a trusted rescue, volunteer to foster a double merle, donate to a rescue that focuses on double merles, buy gifts from a double merle rescues wish list, socialize your pet with a double merle, learn simple touch commands, learn some sign language commands, get your pet microchipped, have patience with your double merle, try to educate breeders about the double merle gene, and celebrate by having a public double merle party inviting other double merle owners.

Why was this day created?

The aim of National Double Merle Awareness Day is to bring awareness to the condition of double merles and how the double merle gene is passed during breeding as well as to encourage adoption instead of being scared to adopt a dog with some special needs such as deafness or blindness. To teach breeders and educate them of the chances of having a litter of double merles by breeding two merles together, of any breed. To educate breeders to reach out to rescues for help instead of euthanizing them. I want to teach the community that double merles even if deaf or blind or both can be trained and live an amazing happy life. And, of course, to celebrate all dogs everywhere.
