National Cartonnage Day

When is National Cartonnage Day? This day will take place on September 18 of each calendar year.

What is National Cartonnage Day? Each year on the third Saturday of September we will be celebrating the National Cartonnage Day, where cartonnage lovers will gather to have fun and share the creative process of making boxes.
Cartonnage is a traditional technique known as “the art of box making” that was originated in the 19th century in France, and has been revived around the world in the latest years. It has been growing significantly in the US recently. With cartonnage, crafters are having fun while making unique fabric and paper boxes to decorate their homes, for organization and most of all as wonderful unique gifts for family and friends.

Why is this day being celebrated or observed? As more and more fabric and paper lovers are discovering in cartonnage a great way to relax, have fun, and allow the creative process to flow while creating amazing unique projects, it’s important to get connected with fellow crafters, share inspiration and ideas, and feel part of a community that loves and create similar arts.

How should this day be celebrated or observed? Celebrate the cartonnage day by making a unique box or other cartonnage project. The box may be a unique gift that will make your loved ones happy and also the future generations to remember of you. Another way to celebrate is by joining a local or virtual meeting to get together with fellow crafters and celebrate while making the project. Invite a friend to try the technique. Share your love for cartonnage using #NationalCartonnageDay to post on social media.

Who created this day? This day was created in May 2021 by Colorway Arts.
